Venture Capitalists: Tackling AI’s unsolved problems creates startup opportunities

Enterprise-level ChatGPT is a game-changer. Interface and LLM generated 10 years' worth of AI awareness in one year, even though one-third of cybersecurity companies were already using AI. The difference today is scale. The cloud enables large datasets of all kinds, increasing the number of variables from 700 to millions of data points.

Alex Doll, founder and managing general partner of Ten Eleven Ventures, said innovators are using AI to do things that incumbents can't do. Incumbents typically struggle with new attack surfaces, and AI is a new attack surface, as is mobile and cloud. Startups move at a faster pace and don't suffer from technical debt. Additionally, there are no established players, making it a good area for investment.
“Outside of the security industry, most people don't understand how data flows, and AI is going to add to that problem in ways that aren't easy to solve,” Dole said. I did. “This creates an area of opportunity for companies that focus on trust, privacy, and AI.”
In a video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, Dole also said:
- How the focus of AI has shifted from algorithms to issues related to data pipelines, cloud usage, and unique AI data identification.
- Why AI hallucinations are a symptom of a larger problem: Data provenance.
- How AI is just mass automation where organizations build abstraction layers to automate.
Doll founded Ten Eleven and has years of experience working on both ventures and growth opportunities in the cybersecurity space. In 2002 she co-founded PGP Corp. and served as a member of the management team as a pioneer in the encryption and data protection market. After PGP, Dole continued her involvement with security firms as an angel investor, independent director, and consultant to her private equity firm KKR's security trading team.
