OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Blue humidifiers were still in place at the Maple Athletic Complex near 120th and Fort streets on Friday, four days after a severe thunderstorm dumped several inches of rain on Omaha.
“Around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, the creek in the back flooded, overflowed and water started pouring in through multiple doors,” said Landon Arnold, manager of the complex.
Arnold found the soccer field's turf flooded with water, and he and his team have been working tirelessly to clean and dry as much as they can.
“It's still a little damp so we're not going to let anybody play here,” Arnold said.
The tennis courts were also flooded but have since dried up, and players like Mike Mundt are happy the courts are open again.
“I missed Wednesday but we have a game on Friday so I rushed to get it back,” Mundt said.
City parks and trails near the sports complex were also heavily damaged by flooding, but the city said cleanup was progressing well and no impacts were expected to be made to park visitors over the holiday weekend.
It's unclear whether the field will open quickly enough for the complex's staff and all the work that still needs to be done.
“It's not ideal because we have the big leagues on Sunday that run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., but we can't stop it,” Arnold said.
The complex's soccer field is expected to reopen by Tuesday.
