The Oakland County Health Department recommends that residents get a measles vaccination before traveling in the spring.
In late February, Oakland County confirmed its first measles case since 2019. This case was travel-related.
As of March 7, there were a total of 45 confirmed measles cases in 16 states, including cases in Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
Dr. Russell Faust, medical director of the Oakland County Health Department, said, “If you haven't been vaccinated against measles, please get vaccinated.'' Due to the current outbreaks of infectious diseases occurring overseas and within the United States, Vaccination before travel is especially important. Two doses of the vaccine are most effective, but you can still get effective protection if you only have time to get one dose before traveling.”
Measles cases are usually associated with international travel and then spread to people within the United States.
The ministry says anyone who has not been vaccinated against measles is at risk of becoming infected and transmitting it to others. One dose of the vaccine gives him 93% protection, and two doses gives him 97% protection. It is best to complete your vaccination series at least two weeks before your trip. This vaccine is also effective in preventing the disease if used within 72 hours after exposure to measles.
