The annual County Youth Service Program was held on Friday, April 5th. Pine Bush had his seven students participate in this great educational day sponsored by Orange County, OU BOCES, and the Orange County Youth Authority.
Members of the Youth in Government group went after various agencies and influential people in Orange County. The day began at 8:30 a.m. and students were introduced to their agency and the people who will educate them about the agency and the job. Pine Bush students observed the following:
- Jacob Schuh I went to the Orange County Airport (for those who want to be pilots!!)
- Gavin Bendy and Lydia Ruksha Shadow Judge Richard Gartin
- Joseph Dickman and Logan Norton-Lapsley I went to the Public Works Department.
- Jesse Morse and Riley Cool They were at the Orange County Courthouse to participate in a mock legislative session and discuss local laws prohibiting cyberbullying in Orange County.
All participating schools in the county also sent seven students. Some of these students won positions in a mock steering competition held in November of this year. They could follow the person who had earned the position they had earned and see what the job was like.
The afternoon ended with a luncheon at the Wallkill Golf Course for students and all participants of the day. Students heard speeches from former New York State Senator Mike Martucci, OU BOCES program director and main speaker. He gave an encouraging speech to the students about participation and civility in the world of politics. He said the future of the government and its future policies are in their hands.
Pinebush Youth in Government Club Advisor Charlene Webster said: “The students had a great time and represented Pinebush High School wonderfully.”
