On May 30, the Ukrainian government announced that foreigners will need to pass two exams on the Ukrainian Constitution and Ukrainian history in order to obtain Ukrainian citizenship.
The decision applies not only to foreigners, but also to stateless persons and individuals who previously acquired Ukrainian citizenship, the latter of whom can take the exam within two years.
The exam will consist of 20 questions on the fundamentals of the Constitution of Ukraine and 25 questions on the history of Ukraine.
According to the government, many decrees and regulations still need to be adopted and implemented before the trials begin.
“So far only decisions in principle have been taken,” the statement said.
To take the exam, those who wish to obtain citizenship will need to create an e-account and submit an application in electronic form. Upon passing the exam, a certificate will be issued.
The government said more details would be announced at a later date.
In early May, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, backed the first reading of a bill that would grant Ukrainian citizenship to foreign volunteers fighting alongside the Ukrainian military.
The bill reportedly provides for the granting of permits to foreigners and stateless persons “recruited for the defense of Ukraine as part of the territorial defense forces or volunteer organizations of the territorial community,” as well as temporary residence permits for their family members.
