Google unveils new AI video game agent to team up with players
By Movieguide® Contributor
Google is changing the way video games are played by developing AI that can collaborate and communicate with players in any game scenario.
SIMA, the new AI, is learning how to play different games. Rather than focusing on teaching AI how to get an edge in these games, researchers are looking to create companions that players can add to their gaming experiences.
“SIMA isn't trained to win games; it's trained to run and do what you're told,” said Tim Harley, Google DeepMind researcher and SIMA co-lead. he told reporters.
To help the tool learn how to work with players instead of winning, the AI uses games like No Man's Sky, Teardown, Valheim, and Goat Simulator 3 that have a linear end goal. No games have been trained.
SIMA is currently capable of performing approximately 600 functions upon request from players. This includes climbing ladders and opening maps. Researchers hope that eventually players will be able to request to go to specific areas and set up bases, but for now that's still a long way off.
Google's approach to creating this AI is different from other video game AI ventures that have created AI agents that dominate the field. AI is also used in games to create interactable characters with unique dialogue and stories each time a user interacts with them.
SIMA is currently being developed for use in video games, but researchers hope the technology can eventually be applied to the real world, operating in response to complex voice commands. I am.
“Ultimately, our research builds toward more general AI systems and agents that can understand and safely perform a wide range of tasks in ways that are useful to people online and in the real world.” the researchers said.
Movieguide® previously reported on the intersection of gaming and AI:
Generative AI is expected to impact many professions, and this technology will revolutionize the video game industry by eliminating menial tasks and making games more immersive.
Most modern video games include non-playable characters known as NPCs to add a level of interaction to the game. Game developers program the movement and dialogue of these characters.
“When you think about these NPCs, they look a little strange,” Alexis Rowland, director of development at La Forge China, a branch of Ubisoft's research and development division, told CNN. “You can tell there's something off about what you're seeing or hearing.”
However, generative AI has the potential to change this. Earlier this year, La Forge released his Ghostwriter tool. This tool has the ability to generate new text every time the player speaks to her NPC, and generate body gestures based on that new text.
