Google has announced several new updates to its maps and search features, aimed at helping users plan their travels thanks to AI.
Users in more than 40 cities in the U.S. and Canada will now be able to access a list of recommended places to eat and visit through Google Maps. Suggestions generated by these algorithms include a weekly-updated “trending” list featuring places currently surging in popularity, a “top” list of places known for their perennial popularity, and highlighting less popular places. The “gem” list consists of three main lists. A lesser known but worthy destination.

In addition to this, Google Maps features a curated list of recommendations from top sources such as Lonely Planet, The New York Times, The Infatuation, and OpenTable. At the same time, Google Maps on Android and iOS is introducing enhanced customization features for creating personal listings.
For the first time, users can rearrange the order of locations in these lists and link to related posts on their social media channels. These customizable and shareable lists will help you plan your trip, track your favorite places, and more.
In the coming months, we'll start highlighting some of the best listings from the maps community. Therefore, those who have created a list that they think others will appreciate, please [email protected].
Google will also update the design to give Maps a new look, including a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs and new pin colors that will make it easier to find places on the map. The tech giant also says it uses AI to generate an intelligent overview of locations on Google Maps, including reviews and user-uploaded photos. We also plan to utilize AI to enhance food photos with detailed information such as the specific dish name.
Google advances AI
In October 2023, the California-based company announced Immersive Views for cycling, driving, and walking directions, which leverages Google's AI to provide detailed previews of your journey. Users can view a photorealistic 3D simulation of their entire route to help them prepare for each turn and avoid problems such as traffic jams.
The feature also integrates AI-based analytics for weather and traffic forecasting. Immersive View first launched for locations in July 2023, but has expanded to routes in cities around the world. The extension shows routes in 3D, as well as augmented reality search capabilities and information about electric vehicle charging.
