Canadian discount store chain Giant Tiger is warning of a recent cybersecurity breach involving customer information.
The chain made the announcement on Saturday, saying it had become aware of an issue affecting a “third-party vendor” it uses to manage customer interactions.
The chain said a third party was able to obtain copies of customer information on March 4. Giant Tiger has since hired cybersecurity experts to assist with an independent investigation.
According to Chain, the information that may be relevant will vary from person to person, but may include information such as:
- For those who subscribe to Giant Tiger's emails or create an account on the chain's website, relevant information includes the customer's name and email address.
- For anyone who is a member of the GT VIP Loyalty Plan, relevant information includes the customer's name, email address, and phone number.
- Information about people who place online delivery orders includes the customer's name, email address, mailing address, and phone number.
- For those who place an order for pickup at a local store, relevant information includes the customer's name, email address, and phone number.
Giant Tiger says this information does not include credit card or other payment information or passwords.
The chain also said it is contacting each customer whose information was involved in the incident.
The company also warns about emails, mail, text messages, and phone calls that appear to come from Giant Tiger.
“We deeply regret that such an incident occurred. We would like to assure you that we are making every effort to resolve the incident as quickly and transparently as possible. Your privacy is “This is important to us and we remain committed to adopting best practices to prevent these types of incidents,” Giant Tiger said in a statement on Saturday.
