RENO, Nev. (COLO) – Gasoline prices are rising across the country, and we're seeing them locally too.
According to AAA, the national average gas price is $3.53. The average price in Nevada was $4.39, up nearly $1. Washoe County faces even higher prices. Now people are paying closer to $5.
“In Oregon, regular gas was $4.03 a gallon. Here, it's $4.59. I've seen it in California, but it cost more than $6,” said a driver who returned to Oregon through California and Nevada. Jerry Grissom said. “I fill up here on purpose because I can drive home with a full tank and I don't have to use California gas.”
The average price in California is just over $5, but most of the gas comes from refineries in San Francisco or Los Angeles, impacting people in Nevada.
Local business owners are feeling the pain at the pump. CW Graphics owner Clay Wilson added: “It's very heartbreaking.” “Right now I'm out delivering. I have to pay to deliver. I have to deliver to get paid so I can afford gas.”
Grissom told KOLO 8 News Now that he now spends a lot of time on road trips, and while he can't beat the price at the pump, he does find the cycles expensive. “Gasoline prices are going up. I watch the stock market, I watch everything out there. Oil prices are going up barrel by barrel,” Grissom said. “When you see prices go up, you know you're going to pay more. I used to live in California, and they switched gas, so when Memorial Day comes around, gas prices shoot up again.”
Many people ended up filling their tanks half or a quarter full. “It goes up and down quite a bit, but it's hard to get gas,” Wilson said. “I come here and I want to fill up the tank, but it hurts, so lately I’ve been filling about half the tank.”
If you're planning a trip, AAA offers a gas cost calculator. This will help you plan and calculate how much you'll pay at the pump.
