Whether it's sports, television, movies, or gaming, discussions about the “greatest of all time” are inevitable. These discussions are often filled with unnecessary comparisons of apples and oranges, and as a result are unlikely to yield a final answer that will satisfy everyone. But that's what makes them so much fun. In that spirit, we held our own reader-voted bracket-style tournament in March to determine the greatest video game of all time.
we are here but game informer This bracket was heavily influenced by a reader poll held in conjunction with issue 300 in 2018. We assembled a starting bracket for 64 games by combining the results of our 2018 reader poll with input from our staff, popular opinion in various online communities, and critical reviews of recent games. Still, there were some exclusions that raised eyebrows within the community. Most notably, games like the original Deus Ex, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Max Payne, and Ori games.
From there, we ran two rounds of voting per week until we narrowed the field down to one final winner. As a result of over 200,000 votes, game informer Our readers and community rate The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as the best video game of all time. This is in contrast to his 2018 reader poll results, which placed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in first place and The Last of Us in second place. There were a few explosions along the way, and I also experienced quite a few close calls. In a close tournament, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater won, defeating leading Pokémon entries Red and Blue by just 12 votes. Meanwhile, one of the tournament's biggest upsets, Metroid Prime vs. The Last of Us Part II, was also one of the closest, with Samus defeating Ellie by just 23 votes. In the end, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past narrowly defeated Half-Life 2 by less than 90 votes, separating these two of his classics.
