Funko Fusion has been announced as an upcoming LEGO game-style platformer for PC and consoles. The game combines over 20 of his famous film and TV franchises in Funko Pop's iconic big head and big-eyed fashion, and is scheduled to be released in just a few months.
The release trailer shows the game's villain giving a creepy monologue about how he will absorb the powers of Funko Pops and conquer the world. The range of Universal-owned franchises packed into the game is pretty crazy. Combined properties include The Mummy, Hot Fuzz, Masters of the Universe, The Umbrella Academy, and more. This is certainly a more decentralized approach than the LEGO franchise's general strategy of dedicating individual games to his one franchise rather than combining all games together (LEGO Dimensions notwithstanding). Still, there is no precedent for this kind of approach working, as games like Fortnite and Multiversus have had a lot of success combining incredibly disparate series into one game. There certainly is.
Funko Fusion is developer 10:10 Games' debut title. The studio was co-founded by Jon Burton, five-time BAFTA Award winner and founder of TT Games. Burton, like many of the other developers on the team, has extensive experience working on LEGO games, and certainly seems like the right pedigree for this type of game. Funko Fusion's trailer is a little light on gameplay, but the combination of combat and co-op puzzle solving should be familiar to fans of TT Games' past LEGO titles.
“10:10 Games' vision is to create amazing cooperative video game experiences that connect gamers around the world with unique, fun, energetic and authentic gaming experiences.” said Arthur Parsons, co-founder and head of publishing at 10:10 Games, in a press release. “Created by a talented team, Funko Fusion is the ultimate celebration of fandom, fusing humor, fun mechanics, and fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled action with beloved film and television classics of all generations. Funko Fusion is an experience we believe is waiting for fans to play. And finally, on a personal note, you can now play He-Man in a video game.”
This year will also see the release of a line of Funko Pop collectibles with physical tie-ins with Funko Fusion characters to promote the game. Funko Fusion will be released on September 13th on his PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S (according to his website for the game he's flying Xbox One), and Nintendo Switch.
