CANANDAIGUA – Tegan Trocchi upset the Class C Far West Regional on Saturday night.
The Frewsburg Bears will be traveling to the eastern part of the state for her.
Trocchi made eight 3-pointers, including a banked half-court shot to tie the game at the end of the third quarter, as the Section 6 champions rallied from nine down to defeat Section 5 champion Dundee/Bradford at 75. -Breaked at 67. “I think this team has put in a lot of effort all year to get there. They deserve to go,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Bieber said. “It would definitely have been disappointing if we didn’t win this game.”
Combined with sister Jadyn's game-high 27 points, Trokis propelled the Bears to the state semifinals against Duanesburg in Game 2 at Hudson Valley CC on Thursday at 6 p.m.
“It was definitely a little bit of a relief to win,” Bieber added. “Our program has never been through this game, so being able to get that monkey off our back was huge.”
Jaidyn Trocchi scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the first quarter, as Frewsburg took a 23-17 lead Saturday, but the freshman was injured for long stretches of the second quarter. He went to the bench and allowed the Braves Scotts to score. They led 33-30 at halftime.
“Jaydyn is very important to us. She creates a lot for us. Between her and Tatum (Jimmerson), they do most of the ball handling,” Bieber said. said. “Jaydyn had a little bit of an injury… that allowed them to come back. … We struggled a little bit offensively while she was out.”
Dundee/Bradford ultimately took a 53-44 lead on Kendall Parker's corner 3-pointer with about three minutes left in the third quarter, and Frewsburg began to fight back.
“Whenever I'm depressed, I worry,” Tegan Trocchi says. “We knew we had it in us and we were going to keep fighting no matter what. We were going to keep going until the final buzzer.”
The Bears ended the third quarter on a 12-4 run, with Tegan Trocchi making an unexpected 3-pointer at the buzzer. After receiving a pass from a teammate, the junior checked his watch before dribbling upcourt toward the basket. Near halfcourt, she spun past her defender and fired a shot that let go of her hand just before the buzzer and banked into the backboard to tie the game at 57-all.
“We knew we didn’t have a lot of time,” Tegan Trocchi said. “Jaydin was yelling at me to shoot, so he just kind of turned around and fired, prayed a little bit, and it fired.”
“We practice half-court shots for Tim Hortons…We do it before every game. Tim Hortons does a lot of work for me, so I I owe my life to Tim Hortons,” Bieber said. “As soon as she made the shot, she looked at me and said, 'That's Tim Hortons.' … Whatever they want… I'll get it.”
Tegan Trocchi then hit three consecutive 3-pointers for the team to start the fourth quarter, followed by a bucket from Jadyn Trocchi to make it 68-61 with 5:20 remaining.
“That's what she does. She shoots the ball. We did a really good job of finding her,” Bieber said of Tegan Trocchi. “It's hard for her team to take her away because she has three other girls on the floor that can make shots.”
Dundee and Bradford never got closer than five minutes remaining, with Tegan Trocchi hitting her eighth triple of the game to make it 75-65 with 1:07 remaining.
“She plays in different gyms and has different vibes. She doesn't get rattled easily,” Bieber said. “She takes so many shots that she just sticks to her form. She doesn't change anything. She also knows that even if a couple are gone, she'll come back.” I know.”
Frewsburg, which has lost twice in the Far West Regional in the past, including one game two years ago when current Bears' Tatum Jimerson, Ava Jimerson and Tegan Trocchi were freshmen, is the first state in program history. He will play in the semifinals.
“It's crazy…we've been playing together since we were in 3-on-3 tournaments in third grade,” Tegan Trocchi said. “…It's really great to know that the effort we put in is paying off.”
