BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, Fla. – Luis Velez, Florida Tech assistant athletic director for sports medicine and performance, announced the hiring of Melissa Wieand as associate athletic trainer.
“We are excited to have Melissa join our team and return to the Space Coast where she grew up,” Beres said. “Her professional background as an athletic trainer will bring another perspective that will further enrich our sports medicine staff.”
Wiand came to Florida Tech after working with the Green Bay Packers as a fellow athletic trainer starting in 2023.
“I am very excited to have this opportunity at Florida Tech and to return to my home community,” Wieand said. “I look forward to collaborating with Florida Tech’s talented sports medicine staff and scholar-athletes on the next journey of my career.”
While working for the Packers, she developed a rehabilitation plan for the team's weight room program and managed the pregame locker room setup during away games. In addition, she conducted comprehensive weekly inspections of all emergency equipment to ensure functionality and reliability.
Prior to his time in Green Bay, Wiand spent the 2022-2023 season as an athletic training fellow at Florida Atlantic University, where he joined the Owls' football and track programs.
There, she was the primary source of communication between athletes and physicians, supervising student interns while working with hospital schedulers to order diagnostic imaging and coordinate insurance.
Earlier that year, she also gained experience working as a training camp intern for the Los Angeles Chargers. She assisted with sweat and hydration testing, managed inventory, and adjusted pregame equipment for team travel.
In 2021-2022, Wieand attended the University of Connecticut (UCONN) as a graduate student and worked on the recreational sports teams. Her duties included conducting on-site injury assessments as well as collaborating with physicians on concussion management protocols.
Throughout graduate school, Wieand worked as assistant director of sports safety at the Korey Stringer Institute, Westminster School, University of Florida football camp, and Valdosta High School.
As an undergraduate at the University of Florida, she participated in the Gators women's basketball, swimming and diving teams, and football programs. Other experiences during her time in school include working for the Philadelphia Flyers during their rookie training camp at Eastside High School and interning in the Patrick South end zone at the University of Florida.
She is certified in Basic Life Support (CPR) through the American Heart Association.
Wieand earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Florida in May 2020. In 2022, he earned a master's degree in kinesiology at UCONN.
