Amazon Prime Video's Fallout series has had a great reception, receiving high scores from critics and garnering tons of praise on social media. It faithfully adapts the world of the game while charting its own unique path, and is becoming a huge hit for Amazon, with a second season planned.
I've often heard people say they believe this is the best movie adaptation of a video game ever. At the very least, it could be better than The Last of Us, HBO's high-profile and Emmy-winning Naughty Dog adaptation of his series. Of course, that's subjective (I'd probably also tend to agree? But they're great in different ways). But I wanted to address this “curse of video games” issue and remind everyone that as great as Fallout is, in modern times there are actually better reviews out there. There are four other game-based television series in the works. Below is a list along with other shows with poor reviews for context.
- Arcane – 100% Critics, 96% Audiences
- Cyberpunk: Edge Runner – 100% Critics, 95% Audiences
- The Last of Us – 96% critics, 89% viewers
- Castlevania Nocturne – 96% Critics, 45% Audience
- Castlevania – 94% Critics, 89% Audiences
- Fallout – 93% critics, 86% viewers
- Dragon Age Absolution – 92% Critics, 52% Audiences
- Dragon’s Dogma – 83% Critics, 92% Audiences
- Halo – 80% critics, 61% viewers
- Twisted Metal – 67% Critics, 94% Audience
- Resident Evil – 53% critics, 26% audience
This list has quite a range, but as you can see, most modern animated or live-action video game adaptations have received decent reviews with a few exceptions. His second lowest rated show on the list, “Twisted Metal”, was also well received by fans and a second season was produced.
Speaking of the top five, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are two of the only perfect 100% series that exist on Netflix, especially with audience scores that high (oh yeah) Also Ella Purnell from Fallout? She voiced Jinx in Arcane). The Last of Us is certainly the highest-profile live-action hit on this list, which is why it's being compared like this. I would argue that the original Castlevania anime series was the beginning of this whole new era. And while I don't hate his Nocturne follow-up, I don't think it's better than the original by any means. Or Fallout. Or twisted metal. Interestingly, Fallout comes in at #7 on this list in terms of viewer scores, which is surprising.
Despite the “5th place” I'm deeply impressed with Fallout because unlike The Last of Us, which is a good but very grounded apocalyptic story, Fallout is We needed to take action comedy to a whole new level without the source material. It's easy to see that it might be a hit with gamers, but not with general audiences. In fact, it seems to have been a hit with everyone. We look forward to the announcement of season 2 in the near future.
