New Delhi:
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today announced that the Government of India has increased support for students in the United States, providing enhanced guidance and security for Indian and Indian-origin students in response to the recent deaths of some students.
The 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who moved to the US in 2023 to pursue a master's degree at Cleveland State University, was found dead earlier this week. The incident marks another episode in the trend of deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the United States.
“There have been several unfortunate incidents in which Indian students have died in the US. These incidents are under investigation. The embassies and consulates are providing all assistance,” the MEA said today.
“Cases like this are properly taken up with U.S. authorities to seek justice. We also strengthen our support for our students, provide them with guidance, and ensure that our embassy and consular support is always available.” We are working hard to ensure that they are taken into consideration,” the MEA said.
Since January, 11 Indian and Indian students have died in the United States.
The US remains a popular destination for Indian students pursuing higher education. According to the US, over 260,000 Indian students came to the country in the 2022-2023 academic session. This was a 35% increase from the previous session.
