Wichita, Kansas – Georgia Tech baseball senior catcher Matthew Ellis (Waddy, Kentucky/Shelby County, Indiana) has gained national recognition and was named to the Buster Posey Award watch list on Friday, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced.
The renamed Buster Posey Award, formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, recognizes the nation's top college catcher for the season. Ellis is one of four catchers on the Atlantic Coast Conference's 63-man roster.
Ellis became one of Tech's top offensive threats in 35 games in the Flats. The Wady, Kentucky, native is batting .320 with 41 hits, nine doubles and 10 home runs this season, along with 39 RBIs and a 1.072 OPS.
The veteran catcher has been especially explosive lately, leading the team with a .432 average over the past 10 games. During that span, Ellis had 16 hits, three doubles, six home runs (including two grand slams), and had a whopping 19 RBIs. He is hitting bases with an on-base percentage of .511 while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Georgia Tech, known as “Catcher U,” has produced five Buster Posey Award finalists, including recipients Joey Bart and Kevin Parada. Matt Wieters, Kyle McCann and Zane Evans are also at Tech.
Ellis College and Georgia Tech continue their grueling schedule to end the season as they play four top-10 teams in five straight weeks, starting with No. 10 ranked Virginia on Friday, April 19th. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
