WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – Friday night's men's and women's ECAC hockey and Canton boys basketball previews are in the spotlight.
In the women's ECAC hockey semifinals in Hamilton, second-seeded Clarkson faced third-seeded St. Lawrence.
Late in the first inning, Haley Wynn took the lead and Clarkson broke the scoreless tie. After the first period, Clarkson led 1-0.
In the second period, Senna Catterall pushed the loose puck home, allowing Clarkson to further extend its lead. 2-0 Lady Golden Knights.
Rachel Bjorgan lit the lamp and St. Lawrence responded, cutting Clarkson's lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, Catterall added an empty netter.
Clarkson defeated St. Lawrence 3-1 to advance to the ECAC championship game and will face No. 1 seed Colgate for the title.
In the opening game of the men's ECAC playoffs, St. Lawrence hosted Yale.
Midway through the first, Thomas Mazzula scored on a breakaway to give the Saints the lead. 1-0 Saints.
With the score tied at 1 in the second inning, Tyler Crystal found his mark just in front of the power play goal. 2-1 St. Lawrence.
It was still two points, but Greg Lapointe took a shot into the net, and the shot went into the net, tying the game at two. 3-2 Saints.
Jan Olenginsky hit a blast to make it 4-2.
The Saints won 4-2 and advanced to the ECAC quarterfinals.
The Canton Golden Bears will look to earn a ticket to the state final four when they face Stillwater in the state Class B quarterfinals Saturday at SUNY Potsdam.
Canton enters the game with a 21-3 record and is ranked No. 4 in the state in Class B in the latest New York State Sportswriters poll.
The two teams met on Dec. 22, with Stillwater defeating Canton 83-60.
Canton coach Troy Lacial knows his team needs to be on top of its game to win.
“We played Stillwater earlier in the year. They had some big kids and gave us a lot of trouble. I thought we blended in pretty well with their guard. “It's going to be an effort on our part to get them away from the glass and closer to their shooters,” Lacial said.
“We're good defensively. We take a lot of shots. We worked hard during practice, taking rep shots and playing defense,” Canton's Taran Green said. Ta.
