NEW ORLEANS — With Easter Sunday just around the corner, the number of travelers is increasing at Louis Armstrong International Airport.
“I'm so excited and so happy to be here,” said one traveler.
Today, the Loen family is flying into town to prepare for the Crescent City Classic.
“I'm really looking forward to the race, but I'm most looking forward to eating at all the restaurants after the race,” Crescent City Classic runner Paul Rowen said.
Good Friday is always a busy day for travelers, but this year it's breaking records. 50,000 planes will take to the skies this weekend.
“88% of people who are going on vacation say they plan to fly during spring break,” said Lindsay Schwimmer, a consumer travel expert.
Many of those flights are to New Orleans. New Orleans is in the top 20 most popular Easter travel destinations in the world, according to AAA travel data.
From the Crescent City Classic to Mass at St. Louis Cathedral, people from all over the world travel to New Orleans to celebrate Easter weekend. Kelly Schultz, senior vice president of communications for New Orleans & Company, said Easter weekend is important for business.
“A weekend like this, with nice weather and a holiday weekend, will see a lot of business for the community, hotels, restaurants, music clubs, shops, tour guides and musicians,” Schulz said.
No holiday in New Orleans would be complete without a parade.
“The Easter Parade and the Gay Easter Parade roll through the French Quarter and they are always the highlight of Easter weekend,” Schulz said. “You know, people here always find a reason to celebrate with parades, and Easter is no exception.”
