As if things couldn't get any worse, EA is now looking at ways to squeeze as much money as possible out of users by placing ads in their video games.
There were mass layoffs with CEOs taking no responsibility, AI was shoved in our faces everywhere possible to eventually replace everyone, and now real world advertising even within video games. Is it appearing? When will his AAA status end for this game? Of course never. The CEO and his shareholders never stop chasing extra money wherever possible. It's growth for growth's sake, and it must continue. Let's consume consumers!
Andrew Wilson, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Arts, said in the latest financial report:
“To answer your broader question about advertising again, I think we're still in the early stages on that front, and we've looked back at our history and been very deliberate about advertising in the context of the play experience. But again, we know that billions of hours are spent both playing, creating, watching, and connecting, and that much of that engagement comes from traditional gaming experiences. Within limits, we expect there to be an opportunity for advertising to be a meaningful driver of growth for us.”
Wilson continues:
“We're going to be working very carefully towards that, and we have a team in-house right now that's looking at how we can implement it very thoughtfully within the game experience. But more importantly, , it's time to start building community and leverage. How do we think about the power of community beyond gaming and advertising as a driver of growth in these types of experiences?”
This reminds me of that scene in Ready Player One where they talk about selling up to 80% of their vision as advertising.

The report also notes that Apex Legends continues to do well, with “29 point year-over-year growth,” so what about Battlefield? A new service is in the works, “and it's going to be another great live service.” That's… certainly a way to describe the upcoming game.
For fans of Linux and Steam Deck, EA's track record hasn't been great. They keep pushing their homegrown EA anti-cheat, but it's not supported at all, which is causing problems. At least for now, Apex Legends is safe with his just-updated EAC.
