PELLA — For the first time since the 2003-2004 school year, Central University's women's track and field team combined to win the Marjorie Giles All-Sports Championship Trophy presented by the American Rivers Conference.
Central University, which sponsors 10 of the 11 women's sports considered, received a total of 57.5 points, topping Wartburg College's 56.2 points. The Dutch men's team took 3rd place in the Elmar Hertel All Sports Trophy standings with 50.5 points. Central University took second place in the Combined All-Sport Trophy.
Nine points are awarded for each competition to win the conference title, with points allocated in descending order, with the last-place team receiving one point. In track and field, the outdoor winner receives 6.3 points and the indoor winner receives 2.7 points. Additionally, point totals are lower for swimming, diving, and competitive dance because not all nine conference institutions sponsor these sports.
For girls, Central High School won conference championships in softball and dance, and also took second place in golf and cross country. The Central High School girls team finished in the top four a total of eight times.
On the boys side, the Dutch did not win a conference title, but took runner-up in cross country and third in soccer, golf and basketball.
Central has won all boys sports titles 14 times and all girls sports titles 10 times.
