StepSecurity, a cybersecurity company specializing in CI/CD pipeline and infrastructure protection, has successfully closed a $3 million seed funding round.
The round was led by Runtime Ventures, with investment from Inner Loop Capital, SaaS Ventures, DeVC, and several prominent industry leaders as angel investors.
StepSecurity provides a robust platform designed to secure CI/CD pipelines used in open source projects and enterprise environments. The company has become a significant player in the space since it was founded two years ago by cybersecurity experts Varun Sharma and Ashish Kurmi. Its services are integral to his more than 3,000 open source projects with prominent organizations such as Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Google, and Microsoft.
The new funding will go toward significant expansion efforts. StepSecurity is making significant investments in the open source community and plans to expand its enterprise offerings. Future developments include extending its platform across various CI/CD environments such as GitLab CI, Harness, and Azure DevOps. Additionally, the company is actively hiring for several roles across engineering, sales, and marketing to support its growth trajectory.
StepSecurity CEO Varun Sharma emphasized the urgency of securing CI/CD pipelines. “Enterprises typically have robust application and cloud security solutions in place. However, the critical link between these two environments, CI/CD, remains unsecured. We analyzed the breach and built the platform using a first-principles approach.”
Michael Sutton, general partner and co-founder of Runtime Ventures, said of this investment: “Not only have attackers learned that the CI/CD pipeline is a weak link in application security, but they have also learned that a successful supply chain attack can have the following effect: exponential impact.
“Supply chain attacks such as SolarWinds and Codecov have affected thousands of businesses due to the widespread use of vulnerable applications. Security leaders are realizing that CI/CD security can no longer be ignored. StepSecurity is at the forefront of this paradigm shift.”
