Civic technology nonprofit Code for America announced Thursday that it will host a series of new workshops this fall aimed at helping bring human-centered artificial intelligence to government.
The initiative, called the AI Studio, will host in-person and virtual workshops to explore the importance of testing and scaling AI adoption, how to incorporate human-centric principles, and how to mitigate risks associated with the technology and potential use cases.
“We have entered a new digital era defined by emerging technologies that have the potential to transform the relationship between government and its citizens,” Code for America CEO Amanda Renteria said in a press release. “Governments can and must deploy human-centered AI that treats people with dignity and respect when receiving critical services like food assistance, tax benefits and expungement of criminal records.”
AI Studio is an extension of Code for America's artificial intelligence work. Last year, Code for America released an AI-powered chatbot for GetCalFresh, the digital enrollment assistant for California's supplemental nutrition assistance program. The chatbot was developed to answer simple questions and guide users to relevant resources.
