The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) plans to appoint longtime cyber policy expert Jeff Green as its new executive assistant director for cybersecurity. Green, currently with the Aspen Institute, will succeed Eric Goldstein, who has served as CISA's distinguished leader since 2021.
Greene is uniquely qualified for this important role with her extensive experience in cybersecurity policy and practice, having previously served in roles including Director of Cyber Response and Policy at the National Security Council's Cyber Directorate and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Additionally, Greene has held influential positions in the White House and on Congress, serving on both the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees.
A source familiar with the decision confirmed Green's appointment, highlighting his deep expertise and leadership in the cybersecurity field. Green currently serves as senior director of cybersecurity programs at Aspen Digital and previously served as vice president at cybersecurity company Symantec. His multifaceted experience spans roles in both the private sector and government, including serving as an adviser to the Senate special investigation into Hurricane Katrina.
Goldstein, who announced his retirement last week to take an undisclosed position in the private sector, has been instrumental in shaping CISA's cybersecurity efforts over the past few years. Under his leadership, the agency has made great strides in strengthening the nation's cybersecurity posture.
CISA confirmed that Greene would be joining the agency but did not officially say she would be replacing Goldstein. The agency confirmed that Greene would start in early June and serve as a senior adviser, but many expect her to take on the role of executive assistant director.
Vivian Schiller, executive director of the Aspen Institute's Aspen Digital Program, praised Green's contributions, saying, “He has been the visionary leader of Aspen Digital's cybersecurity program over the past two years.”
“Greene's appointment is a strategic move to continue advancing CISA's mission of protecting the nation's critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Her extensive experience and leadership in cybersecurity policy and operations will further strengthen CISA's ability to secure the digital environment.”
As CISA prepares for a leadership transition, it remains committed to its mission of strengthening the security and resilience of the nation's cyber and infrastructure systems.
