According to the latest data from Circana (formerly The NPD Group), sales of video games, hardware and related accessories fell 3% to $4.1 billion in April from $4.22 billion in the same month last year, due to a sharp drop in hardware sales.
Content revenue increased 2% to $3.74 billion from $3.66 billion in the same period last year. Console sales decreased 43% to $208 million from $365 million, and accessory revenue decreased 4% to $152 million from $158.3 million in the same period last year.
While Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo Switch hardware sales continue to decline, Sony's PlayStation 5 saw an increase in unit sales and revenue.
The best-selling games in April were Sony Interactive Entertainment's Stellar Blade and Helldivers IINext up is Activision Blizzard Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
For the year through April, video game hardware sales fell 28% to $1.33 billion from $1.85 billion in the same period last year. Content sales rose 8% to $16.6 billion from $15.4 billion. Accessory sales increased 18% to $859 million from $728 million.
