KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Laci Rice said Wednesday he takes “full responsibility” for his role in a weekend speeding sports car crash that caused a chain reaction on a Dallas freeway and resulted in minor injuries. ” he said. Four people were injured.
Rice leased a Lamborghini SUV and police say he was speeding with the Corvette on the North Central Expressway on Saturday. Police say the accident ultimately involved six vehicles, and the occupants of the Lamborghini and Corvette left the scene without providing information or determining whether anyone needed medical attention. .
“Today, I met with Dallas Police Department investigators regarding Saturday's accident. I take full responsibility for my role in this matter and will continue to cooperate with any necessary authorities,” Rice said in a statement. he wrote in a post on his Instagram Story. “We would like to sincerely apologize to everyone affected by Saturday's accident.”
Rice's attorney said earlier this week that the NFL player is cooperating with authorities, but did not provide further details. The Chiefs also said they were aware of the crash but declined to comment further.
Police have not released information about the other people involved in the accident.
Kyle Coker, an attorney for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company, said Rice leased the Lamborghini from Classic Lifestyle. Under the terms of the lease, Rice would be the only person allowed to drive the car, which would cost about $1,750 a day to rent and be worth about $250,000.
Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West, said Rice “will take all steps necessary to responsibly address this situation.” Mr. West did not respond to questions Tuesday and would not say whether Mr. Rice was driving one of the vehicles.
Rice was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in the North Richland Hills suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. He played college football at nearby SMU and made a big splash in his senior season in 2022, when the wide receiver caught the attention of his NFL team.
The Chiefs drafted him in the second round of last year's draft and quickly became one of their only reliable options in their passing game. Rice was exceptionally quick from the line of scrimmage with 73 receptions for 938 yards, second on the team behind Travis Kelce, and led the Chiefs with seven touchdown receptions.
Rice could have been even better in the playoffs. He had 26 catches for 262 yards and one touchdown, including six catches for 39 yards in the Super Bowl against San Francisco, helping the Chiefs win their third Lombardi Trophy in five years. .
