May marks the official start of the summer travel season, and National Travel and Tourism Week is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of travel and tourism to our physical and mental health, social well-being and the economy. Travel has the immense power to shift our perspective, bring balance to our lives and open our eyes to new opportunities. Whether it's a trip to a local community festival or hiking trail, or a plane ride to another continent, travel has a positive impact on the body, mind and soul.
Travel and tourism is also an important part of North Dakota's diversified economy. New research shows visitors will spend more than $3.3 billion in our state in 2023, impacting all 53 counties. In fact, visitors spend $9 million per day in North Dakota. These dollars will help keep 3,000 businesses afloat, including your favorite restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. Last year, North Dakota saw an increase of 1.3 million travelers, bringing the total number of visitors to 25.6 million.
