CD Project is considering licensing out Cyberpunk or The Witcher IP for use in a mobile game.
As part of a post-earnings Q&A on the publisher's 2023 financial results, a caller asked, “Have you ever considered licensing your major IP to a third party to make mobile games? ” he asked.
They then asked how this would work from a business perspective, is it a one-time license fee or a profit-sharing agreement?
Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski replied that the publisher is indeed considering the possibility, but nothing has been decided yet.
“The answer is very simple,” he answered. “The answer is yes, we are considering such a move.
“In fact, we have been pursuing such an opportunity through conversations. There is nothing to announce yet, but we will announce it when the time is right.
“In terms of one-off business models or other business models related to such potential partnerships, I honestly don't want to comment on the details here. There's nothing wrong with that.
“But what we're looking at in this case is there's no pre-designed business model, whether it's a one-off or profit sharing. That's another story. We will be sure to share information when the time comes.”
Cyberpunk 2077 has never been the subject of a mobile game, but mobile titles based on The Witcher have been released in the past with mixed results.
The Witcher: Monster Slayer is a geolocation-based RPG released in July 2021, but closed in June 2023.
Android and iOS ports of The Witcher card game spinoff Gwent were also released, as was a standalone single-player expansion called Thronebreaker. Although reception for Gwent was generally positive across formats, official support for the game ended in October 2023.
