Carson Wentz finds another job as backup quarterback originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
Former Eagles first-round pick Carson Wentz has signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports.
Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz first reported the deal.
This will be Wentz's fifth team in five years. That goes back to his last season as a starter for the Eagles in 2020. Since then, Wentz has played for the Colts, Commanders and Rams, and is now headed to Kansas City to play under Andy Reid. And as Patrick Mahomes' backup.
Wentz is now 31 years old and clinging to a career that once looked incredibly promising.
The Eagles selected Wentz with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft. In his second season, Wentz was the best player in the league until he tore his ACL and watched backup Nick Foles lead the Eagles to their only Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
Despite some ups and downs over the next two seasons, 2018 and 2019, Wentz still signed a four-year, $128 million contract that would have kept him in Philadelphia through the 2024 season. However, the Eagles ultimately caved and traded Wentz to the Colts in 2020 after Wentz was benched in favor of second-round pick Jalen Hurts.
Wentz had some bright spots with the Colts, but ultimately only lasted one year in Indy before being traded to the Commanders. He spent only one season in Washington before his release. Last November, Wentz signed with the Rams as Matthew Stafford's backup.
Let's take a look back at Wentz's three seasons since leaving the Eagles.
2021 (with IND): 17 games, 9 wins, 8 losses, 322/516 (62.4%), 27 TD, 7 INT, 94.6 rating
2022 by WAS: 9 games, 2-5, 172/276 (62.3%), 11TD, 9INT, 80.2 rating
LAR in 2023: 2 games, 1-0, 17/24 (70.8%), 2 TD, 1 INT, 99.8 rating
His start for the Rams came in Week 18 against the 49ers, with both teams resting their starting lineups.
Wentz was a Pro Bowler in his second NFL season and once looked like he had a very bright future, but he's now over 30 and at a stage in his career where he would be considered a reserve. But getting the opportunity to play behind Mahomes and for a team that has won back-to-back Super Bowls is a perfect fit.
Wentz is several years removed from his time with the Eagles. Hurts, a reserve for the 2020 season, became Philadelphia's new franchise quarterback and led the Eagles to the 2022 Super Bowl.
The Eagles are not scheduled to play Wentz's Chiefs in 2024.
