A landslide known as the “Tramonto Slide” on Pacific Coast Highway near Sunset Boulevard could cause traffic congestion over Memorial Day weekend, according to the California Department of Transportation. (Calif. Department of Transportation District 7)
The California Department of Transportation is warning that complications from earlier landslides could cause problems for travelers over the holiday weekend.
California Department of Transportation District 7 issued a traffic advisory ahead of Memorial Day on Monday, warning drivers in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that one lane of Pacific Coast Highway was closed due to a landslide in Pacific Palisades.
The right lane of the northbound side of PCH is closed at Porto Marina Way, just north of Sunset Boulevard, forcing drivers to merge into one lane, which could cause traffic congestion in this normally very busy area.
The department said the landslide occurred in mid-February and that it has since secured emergency funding to build additional northbound lanes. No timeline has been set for the work, but a contractor is expected to be hired next week.
“The debris is too unstable to be removed from its base,” Caltrans District 7 told X. “All lanes will be moved to the shoulder of the southbound highway to make room for the second northbound lane.”
The California Department of Transportation called the affected area the “Tramonto Landslide” and said it has been hit by destructive landslides for years.
