On Friday, EA Sports released some preview videos for the upcoming college football video game, giving fans their first look at BYU in the game. The short clip shows BYU playing on the road against West Virginia and shows BYU cornerback Jacob Robinson intercepting a pass from Garrett Green.
In the footage, BYU is seen wearing their Royal away uniforms, presumably indicating that the classic Royal home and Royal away jerseys will be the default uniforms for the game.
Another video, with BYU's unofficial team ratings leaked from the “Play Now” screen, featured the BYU-Utah rivalry and gave BYU an overall rating of 87. The offensive rating was 87 and the defensive rating was 80.
Utah had an unofficial rating of 92. Other Big 12 teams with ratings in the game were West Virginia (84), Baylor (92), Arizona State (71) and Arizona (82). Here's a gameplay preview.
The video game is set to be released on July 19th, with those who purchase the deluxe edition receiving it a few days early. This is the first college football video game since 2013.
For the first time ever, college football players will be paid to appear in the game — reportedly making around $600 each — and the universities themselves will receive royalties from EA Sports.
To determine the royalty amount, EA Sports has divided FBS football programs into four tiers, Clict's Matt Liberman reported Friday. The classification criteria include the AP's final poll for the past 10 years. Teams received one point for each season they finished in the top 25. Schools that earned six or more points were placed in Tier 1, those that earned two to five points were placed in Tier 2, those that earned one point were placed in Tier 3 and those that earned zero points were placed in Tier 4.
BYU, which was ranked in both 2020 and 2021, was placed in Tier 2.
