ISHPEMING — It was a tough day for the Copper Country track and field team here on a rainy Thursday, as they finished well behind the leader in the Division 2 regional meet.
The West Iron County girls team defeated host Hematite 55-54 for the championship. Ironwood followed with 38 points, Hancock with 28 points, and Jeffers with 8 points. The Ishpeming boys won with 89 points, followed by Ironwood with 55, Hancock with 18, Jeffers with 7 and West Iron with 3. Hancock junior Addison Pizzi contributed by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 18.79 seconds. The Bulldogs took second place in the 400 relay (56.47 points).
“I started the hurdles a little slow, so my coach yelled at me and told me to do what I did in practice.” she said. “I'm very happy with the 4×100 relay. This was really good practice for the UP finals. Our handoff was really good.”
The Bulldogs accounted for most of the points with 800, 1600 and 3200.
“Addison got a PB (personal best) in the hurdles, which is good for her.” Hancock coach Jen Smith said. “We did a pretty good job in the long and middle distances, scored a lot of points, and did well in the 400 relay as well.”
Hancock junior Ella Keranen took second to Ishpeming senior Laura Korpi in the 1,600 meters (5:49.14) and 3,200 meters (13:28.31) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:47.57). Senior Brielle Kero took second in the 800 meters (2:49.31). (35.38), her sophomore Jaina Keranen was fourth in the 1600 meters (6:03.69). Bulldogs junior Reyna Tooles placed third in the 3,200 meters (14:00.66) and sophomore Jill Berg placed fourth (14:15.79).
Jeffers High School sophomore Mia Nordstrom placed second in the long jump (14 feet, 4.5 inches), and freshman Brielle Anderson placed third (13 feet, 2 inches). The Hancock High School boys earned their only first place in the shot put with senior Myles Lewis' throw of 44 feet, 7 inches, and sophomore Curtis Archambault took second in the 3,200 meters (12:41.67). “I was disqualified from the 800-meter relay, but I corrected my mistake and qualified for the 400-meter relay.” Mr. Smith said. “Our handoff was much better in the 400 meters.”
Jeffers sophomore Landon Larson placed second in the 400-meter dash (56.32), third in the long jump (16-4) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.52). West Iron senior Danica Chamion and Ishpeming senior Laura Korpi each won four events.
Chamion won the 100 (13.64), the 200 (28.97), the 400 (59.95) and the high jump (4-6) in the pouring rain.
“I'm happy with 400.” Shamion said. “I was running 1:01 and 1:02, which wasn't what I wanted. This brought me one step closer to my goal (56 seconds).”
Just three days after winning the 800 in a personal best 2:25.95 at the Marquette County Meet in Ishpeming-Westwood, Laura Korpi won the 800 in 2:33.18, the 1600 in 5:40.23 and the 3200 in 12: He recorded a score of 28.98. She also served as the anchor for the winning 3200 meter relay. Her younger sister Laney won her first individual victory in the 1,600-meter relay in Westwood (6:24.76). On Thursday, Rainey anchored the relay as she won her first race in the 300 hurdles with a season-best 56.77 points. Won the 1600 relay (4:47.48) by defeating West Iron in a photo finish “Winning the hurdles was a lot of fun.” she said. “I alternated my legs to avoid stuttering. This definitely boosts my confidence. I fell during a race last year and was feeling a little intimidated until today. My coach told me to focus on my surroundings instead of hurdles. I told you to look at it.”
Laura was also happy with how the day went, even though Hematite fell just one point short of the Wicons.
“I’m really happy for Laney.” she said. “That was amazing. I felt pretty good today, but running a 3200 is always tough after running two miles earlier. I wasn't really pressed for time. I just wanted to make it to the finals. Ta.”
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the UP Finals to be held in Kingsford on June 1st.
