If Boyko Borisov's GERB and we continue to change, Bulgaria risks losing a pro-European government – Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB), the two main political parties that have been in government negotiations for more than a week, , no agreement could be reached by midday Tuesday (March 19).
Nine months ago, GERB and PP-DB formed a cabinet led by PPDB's Nikolai Denkov on the condition that Denkov would resign on March 6 and Mariya Gabriel would become prime minister. However, the planned rotation is not going smoothly. Over the last two weeks, the formation has not been able to agree on a number of issues.
Gabriel received the mandate from President Rumen Radev to form a cabinet on Monday, while many issues between GERB and PP-DB remain in dispute.
Gabriel has one week to report the success or failure of his cabinet to the president. However, the time she gave to agree to her PP-DB was only 24 hours.
“We affirm that the negotiations with PP-DB will be completed by 12:00 pm tomorrow, March 19th,” the GERB press center later announced.
Gabriel plans to submit a final decision to President Rumen Radev on Tuesday, GERB said. If this attempt fails, Bulgaria will be headed for early elections that could coincide with the European elections.
The unholy alliance between GERB and PP-DB is supported by the Turkish minority party DPS, another pro-EU party.
The coalition government pursues pro-European policies, aims for full accession to the Schengen Agreement and the eurozone, and favors providing military aid to Ukraine, but other members of parliament, such as pro-Russian nationalists and populists in Vazrajdan, The Bulgarian Socialist Party is taking a pro-Kremlin line in the context of the Ukraine war.
On Monday, DPS Co-Leader Derian Peevski, who is sanctioned for corruption under the Global Magnitsky Act, joined the conversation in a capacity his press center is promoting. “Please sit down and sign. You will receive the support of DPS. It is time for a new start for Bulgaria and DPS will work for it,” he announced just before Gabriel took on the mission. did.
If this scenario materializes, parliament could vote for Gabriel's government in time, allowing him to represent the country at the European Council on the 21-22nd.
