NEWINGTON — It's been a long week for the Newington Nor'easters softball team. They played four games on four consecutive days and went 1-3 in the opening week.
The Nor'easters started the season 1-0 with an 11-4 win over East Hartford on Monday. They suffered their first loss of the season, 8-4, at Windsor on Tuesday. The next day, Wednesday, they lost to EO Smith 9-2. Most recently, the Nor'easters lost 19-4 to the Bristol Central Rams on Thursday.
The Rams took control of the game from the beginning. After scoring three runs in the first inning to give Newington a 3-1 lead, he added three runs in the second inning to take a 12-1 lead. Newington remained scoreless for three consecutive innings, while the Rams exploded, scoring six runs in the fourth inning.
Down 18-1 heading into the fifth inning, Newington was able to score three runs in that inning, but the game ended with Bristol Central on top at 19-4. It was later terminated.
In the loss, Newington committed six errors, one against Bristol Central, and lost 20-5. Their five hits were by Anya Ross, Abbey Greaves, Carly Leonard, April Handel, and Eva Johnson. Ross, Greaves, Handel and Molly Lavoie each scored one goal. Johnson and Kylie Connors had RBIs for Newington.
Bristol Central's Lillian VanNostrand had a big performance for the Rams with four hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Like VanNostrand, Emma Colak, Haley Powers and Maia Pollini each scored four goals. Maia Steiner led the team with five RBIs.
Through the first four games of the season, Ross leads Newington with five points. Johnson and Mya Simpson each tied for the most on the team with five hits.
With this loss, the Nor'easters fell to 1-3 on the season with three straight losses. The Nor'easters' next game is Tuesday at home against the Hall Titans with a 4 p.m. start time. Like last week, Newington will have a busy schedule next week. They will play three straight games following Tuesday's games against Berlin, Maloney and New Britain. Starting next week, we will play three games each week for the next four weeks, barring inclement weather.
With the win, Bristol Central improved to 2-2 and is currently on a two-game winning streak. They opened the season with a 19-8 win over the Pratt Panthers earlier this week after losses to Berlin and Plainville. They will look for their third straight win when they face the RHAM Raptors on the road on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
