Brazil's new bill redefines video games in the country in an effort to grow parts of the gaming industry.as discovered by gaming industryThe Gaming Legal Framework Bill was first lobbied in part by gaming industry association Abragames in 2022.
The bill was signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week and will primarily “promote the growth of the sector”. [and] Create jobs,” wrote Sen. Leila Barros. She and fellow senator Flavio Arnes helped lobby for the bill, along with AbraGames, Brazilian studios, and regional associations.
Barros went on to say that the new bill will give Brazil's gaming industry “more visibility and legal certainty.” Beyond gaming, she hopes the bill will “fight illegal activity and reduce the tax burden.”
According to a recent study conducted by Abragames and ApexBrazil, the number of Brazilian studios increased by 3.2% in 2023. As of 2022, an estimated 13,225 developers are active outside Brazil.
These Brazilian developers include: chroma squad Manufacturer: Behold Studios, Coffee Addict Studio (hazel sky), and wildlife studio (Midas Marge).
That number could rise even further in June. Gamescom summer event It will be launched in São Paulo. Brazil, known as Gamescom Latam, was touted as an “exciting emerging market” at the time of the announcement.
Based on that argument, Abra Games President Rodrigo Terra said that the bill “[let] This country deserves to be truly recognized for its huge potential in this important sector of the creative industries. ”
Terra hopes the bill will lead to the creation of a gaming-specific National Economic Activities Classification (NCAE), as well as sparking more business opportunities and “expanding local and federal support for studios.”
