This week's travel news: Gelato ban in Italy, runaway horses in central London, orange fog hits Athens and, if you're still feeling brave, the best dates to book your summer flights and time.
According to travel company Expedia, the best time for Americans to fly by plane this summer is mid-to-late August. This time of year is expected to be less crowded, and Expedia says travelers can save up to $265 on round-trip flights compared to the last week of June, when average fares are at their peak.
It recommends booking summer flights 21 to 60 days in advance, and last year travelers who booked during this period saved about 15% on domestic and international travel.
Travelers departing on Mondays for international flights or Tuesdays for domestic flights enjoy similar savings compared to those choosing the more popular Thursday and Friday departures. Ta.
Booking too early or too late can be a mistake. A traveler paid 15% more than average if he booked more than 90 days for international travel and less than a week for domestic travel.
The week leading up to Independence Day, which falls on Thursday this year, is expected to be the busiest for flights. Expedia also found that flights scheduled after 3pm are 50% more likely to be canceled, so it may pay to book early.
It's been an eventful week in Europe's capitals and tourist destinations. Athens and other parts of Greece witnessed a spectacular scene as a blanket of orange haze drifted north from the Sahara Desert. Meanwhile, Helsinki was crippled by nearly 8 inches of snow as Finland was hit by an extreme April weather event.
Five horses escaped from a military exercise near Buckingham Palace and galloped through central London, colliding with a vehicle. Two of the animals were reported Thursday to be in “serious condition.”
Protests erupted in Venice after the city became the first city in the world to charge entrance fees for day-trippers. The controversial trial plan will run until mid-July.
Finally, the blades of the famous Moulin Rouge windmill in Paris fell, damaging the building's facade. The incident happened overnight, but fortunately no one was injured.
