After directing DC Studios' Blue Beetle movie last year, Ángel Manuel Soto has finally found his next major, long-delayed directorial project. Good reason movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Soto has been tapped to direct Universal Pictures' live-action Just Cause, an adaptation of the Square Enix action-adventure video game series. Prior to Soto, several directors had worked on the adaptation, including Rampage's Brad Peyton, John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, and Stuber's Michael Dowse. The latest instalment in the project is being produced by The Fall Guys team David Leitch and Kelly McCormick through their 87 North company as part of a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
What is Just Cause?
The Just Cause games are third-person action shooter games released in 2006. The games revolve around secret agent Rico Rodriguez, who travels to a country ruled by a dictatorship in each installment. Upon arrival, he goes on dangerous missions with the main goal of overthrowing the country's dictatorship and ending the fighting between multiple factions across the island. This best-selling video game series spawned three more sequels after its debut.
The film adaptation will be executive produced by Dan Jevons, with Story Kitchen producers Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson. Max Jacoby, Ryan Jones and Tony Ducouré are attached to direct the project. In addition to the Just Cause films, Soto is currently starring in the upcoming action film The Wrecking Crew, starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.
