Wake Tech students now have a library and tutoring center at the university's Beltline Education Center (BEC) to help them succeed.
Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the North Carolina State Library (SLNC), the university will transform Room 223B into a welcoming and inviting library and Individualized Learning Center (ILC), providing all students with equal access to resources and services. I have made it accessible. Students will have access to digital and print resources, receive a variety of free professional tutoring services, attend workshops, and study quietly in new spaces.
A team of representatives from Workforce Continuing Education (WCE) and academic support departments worked together over the past year to bring this project to fruition. They celebrated the new student support resources with Wake Tech leadership and students at a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 24th.
This space is open to all Wake Tech students who wish to improve their basic reading, writing, and math skills, speak English, complete higher education, or prepare for college or employment. You can also.
These students often need the most academic and social support in college, fear of failure, not recognizing themselves in college or a career, and the emotional turmoil of redefining themselves. and other barriers to transforming learning. Providing on-site library and tutoring support has made it more convenient and worry-free for BEC students to seek assistance while attending class.
“We are thrilled to be able to provide BeltLine Education Center students with access to library and tutoring services,” said Dr. Carenado Davis, Director of Academic Support and Learning Resources. “Until now, these services have been very limited for BEC students, requiring them to travel long distances to other parts of campus, which has also been a barrier to accessing support. The additions and encouragement from staff working in the field is truly life-changing and will help build a sense of belonging for our students.”
CCR student Ming Zhang moved here from China about seven years ago. Her native language is Mandarin, and she says her English is improving every day thanks to the tutoring support she currently receives at BEC.
“The tutors here are very kind, patient, and always answer my questions,” she said. “Before coming here, I made a lot of mistakes. The instructor explained things very clearly, so I was able to understand them. Now I feel more confident in speaking English. In the future, I would like to improve my English speaking skills, obtain my high school diploma, and enroll in Wake Tech's healthcare program.
Private lessons are available from Tuesday to Thursday. For more information on the schedule and how to make reservations, visit ilc.waketech.edu.
