Baldur's Gate 3 was a phenomenon. Even in the busy year of 2023, it still stood out as an exceptional piece of work.I think we're going to see ripples from this for years to come, and at least one of them is already clear: Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have greenlit several plans. did Dungeons & DragonsBased games from several major publishers. The latest one is Gameloft. announced this week They're making a co-op survival style title set in the Forgotten Realms, a D&D setting.
Other D&D-based titles announced include a VR title from Resolution Games and a multiplayer title from Starbreeze. I'm not complaining. D&D has a rich lore to draw from and has built-in prank mechanics. Funny story: Her husband and I have been together for her 6 years and realized we had a common interest in TTRPGs. I have no idea how we were able to get along without that important bonding experience for the better part of a decade. In conclusion, I'm all for more D&D-based games, as long as they're made with the same love and humor as Baldur's Gate 3.
Another major story that caught my eye was Embracer and Saber's divorce and how they split up the studio in the divorce. Matthew Kirch, the founder of Beacon, which acquired the company, said the sale would “protect the livelihoods of hundreds of professionals,” an oblique reference to Embracer's layoff trend. I don't think this will completely stop Embracer's “restructuring”, but at least some of Saber's games are still in development.
In personal news, I'm still playing some new games, including Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. We're gearing up for the big releases scheduled for later this month, including Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Princess Peach: Showtime. I have no idea how they're going to fit all these games into their schedule, but what a problem.
