MUMBAI: The electronics manufacturing services (EMS) sector is expected to grow significantly in the coming years but high valuations may dampen investment prospects in the sector, analysts said. Deep Tech encompasses breakthrough advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum computing and advanced materials, with the potential to transform industries and solve some of the world's most challenging problems. Characterized by deep roots in science and engineering, these innovations often require significant time and investment to evolve from idea to market-ready solution. This is where venture capital (VC) comes in as a key driving force. Venture capital is well-suited to support deep tech startups due to their high-risk, high-return investment approach. Deep tech ventures typically have long development cycles and high upfront costs because they rely heavily…

Order emerges from chaos. That's the hope, at least for a group of marketers who've been hit with one ad tech disaster after another recently. First, they were disgusted to find that Forbes was selling ads on a dodgy site designed to manipulate ad spend, and second, they were shocked to find that Colossus was misrepresenting the identities under which it traded. Now people are concerned that these issues are just the tip of the iceberg, and some are already taking action. “They are probably looking at cutting 60% of their partners,” said the head of programmatic, representing advertisers at an…
Proposed European payments regulation aims to crack down on online fraud. Who should pay? The caller ID on the messaging app displayed the name of a bank, requesting a transfer of money to pay for a purchase. Once the money was sent, the messenger and the funds were gone. Known as spoofing, impersonation fraud, or approval push payment fraud, this scam involves hackers masking their identity as a trusted source to trick consumers by stealing their credentials. European policymakers are determined to tackle this identity theft threat: in the new Payment Services Regulation, MEPs have argued that messaging services such…

I enjoyed reading Shira Ovide's May 21st point-of-view, “How Stupid Was OpenAI's Action with Scarlett Johansson?” until the writer made light of OpenAI's misuse of a woman's voice without her consent. The headline-making attack on Johansson was ranked No. 6 on my list of the “7 Stupid Tech Owners,” and Ovide effectively apologized for including it. She prefaced No. 6 by saying, “This one's not as serious as the others,” seemingly suggesting that only court hearings and Wall Street turmoil would lead to consequences.Unfortunately, crimes and misconduct against women often go literally unpunished and perpetrators get away with it. If we…
The number of deaths on Hong Kong's construction sites is unacceptable and despite repeated promises to improve safety over the years, the tragedies continue. One worker was crushed to death this month, two sewer workers died in April after apparently inhaling toxic fumes and two women were killed in February when scaffolding collapsed. With over 3,000 accidents and 20 deaths in the construction industry last year, solutions are needed. When an accident occurs, the usual pattern repeats: work is halted, investigations are launched and, in some cases, fines are imposed.A police investigation at Yuen Wah Playground in Shatin in April found that two…
