– Australian Government joins governments including France, Greece and Albania to support FIA-led efforts
– By signing the Charter, governments commit to support dialogue, research and cooperation on hate speech and to work to prevent and eliminate hate speech.
United Against Online Abuse is proud to announce that the Australian Government has signed the UAOA Charter.
By signing the Charter, governments are demonstrating their commitment to supporting and promoting best practice in the prevention and removal of hate speech, and to supporting dialogue, research and cooperation on this subject.
The Australian Government is already undertaking significant work in this area. In recent years, we passed the Online Safety Act (2021), investigated and consulted on safety measures for online platforms, and worked with the eSafety Commission to create new online safety resources for sport.
Federal Sports Minister Annika Wells signed the document during the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. she said: “We are delighted to sign the United Against Online Abuse Charter and join the coalition in the fight against online harassment. By working together we will eradicate this problem and make it better for everyone involved in sport. We want to build a healthier, more positive and more sustainable future.”
Mohamed Ben Sulayem, FIA president and founding sponsor of the Alliance Against Online Abuse, added: “We are delighted that the Australian Government has joined us in the fight against online abuse in sport. Their support will expand the reach, impact and knowledge base of our campaign and help us move towards zero abuse in sport. It helps you accelerate.”
The Australian Government joins a powerful coalition of stakeholders including Peace and Sport, the International Esports Federation, the French Government, the Albanian Government and the Greek Government.
In 2024, the Coalition made significant progress, awarding four scholarships to researchers in the field of online abuse and launching an industry-first barometer aimed at measuring the Coalition's views on online abuse.
Coalition members and allies will come together in May to discuss the UAOA campaign at their first meeting.
