I start feeling antsy if I go, like, a month without being on a plane. I am a big proponent of catching both flights and feelings, and I practice what I preach. Luckily, as an editor, I get the opportunity to jet off for work multiple times a year, which—in addition to the fact that (a) my family lives in a different country and (b) I can’t say no to a girls’ trip—allows me to scratch my travel itch on the reg. That’s why I can confidently say that I’m a pro when it comes to plane rides, and I know what products are necessary to make long flights feel a hell of a lot more comfortable.
These days, I have a laundry list of items I must stash in my travel tote before I even *think* about Ubering to the airport. These are tried-and-true products that help me sleep, keep me organized, and ensure I wake up looking and feeling like the best version of myself. I’m talking seat-back gadgets, the coziest of accessories, mid-flight makeover methods, and the travel pillow to end all travel pillows (trust me, I’ve tried dozens to come to this conclusion). Here’s a sneak peek at some of the schtuff:
Intrigued? You should be. If you’ve got a long flight on the horizon, keep scrolling to get the essentials. Oh, and btw, if you’re as wanderlusty as I am (or simply want an excuse to buy some of the below gear), check out our CosmoTrips collection page, where you’ll find itineraries for some dreamy destinations and reviews of hotels you’ll never want to check out of.
Metro Sling Bag
Stalk my IG and you’ll see me wearing this in damn near every travel post. It’s the perfect crossbody sling: it stays put, holds way more than you think it does, and has multiple compartments (and even a keyring!) for your passport, boarding pass, hand sanitizer, etc.

Eye Gels (5 Pairs)
There’s no easier way to feel like you’re living the first-class life (even in economy) than by slapping on a pair of eye gels. I love these caffeine-infused ones from Patchology—they come in single-use pouches, so you can stash a couple in your personal item, and leave lookin’ a little more refreshed upon arrival.

Slim Racerback Cropped Tank
I run hot, so I always want to have a bottom layer that I can sleep comfortably in if I get warm on the plane. This tank from Beyond Yoga is my go-to on international flights because it’s got a built-in bra that doesn’t dig in but still gives the girls some support. The fabric is also buttery soft, like your favorite sleep shirt.

SmartGoggles
If you can’t live without your Theragun, prepare to meet the best thing your eyes have ever seen (and felt): Therabody’s SmartGoggles. It’s basically an eye mask that’s so much more than just an eye mask, massaging your eyes and temples and emitting sound and heat to help relieve headaches, reduce heart rate, and get you feeling really, really relaxed. Slipping them on mid-flight is the closest thing you’ll ever get to a mile-high spa, trust. The best part? They fold in half and come in a protective carrying case, so they’re easy to pack.

Light Versatile Pillow
Will you feel like the silliest of all gooses while wearing this wrap-around head pillow/eye mask combo? Yes, absolutely. But I promise you that I have worn it on every single flight I’ve taken since receiving it, because it’s that good. It basically turns anything you rest your head on into a comfy pillow—seat-back tray, plane window, your partner’s bony shoulder, etc.—so you can get a quick nap in anywhere and everywhere.

Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag
Some people like to practice skincare in the sky, and I both respect and admire those people. This toiletry bag is a must if you’re planning on hitting the plane bathroom for a (quick!) get unready with me sesh. You can hang it from any hook, and it fits So. Much. Stuff.

No Drip Extra-Moisturizing Nasal Pump Mist
This might seem like a random suggestion, but if you’ve ever taken flight with a cold or stuffy nose…you get it. And if you haven’t, basically your ears can have trouble equalizing pressure and your head can feel like it’s about to explode (truly one of the most painful experiences of my life). This nasal spray helps relieve congestion in your sinuses so that’s less likely to happen if you use it before take off. (Reminder: always consult a doctor before using any over-the-counter medications if you have any concerns!)

Metro Backpack
A backpack? That’s actually chic? Yes, it’s possible. (I mean…just look at it.) I take this bag on all flights—both short and long—because it fits a ton, is easy to clean, has the perfect padded pocket for my laptop, and comes with a built-in trolley sleeve so I can slide it over my luggage handle. The front pouch is the most innovative feature, though, IMHO—it clips on and off, so you use it to store essentials and throw the bulk of the bag in the overhead compartment to save underseat space.

If you can’t afford a lie-flat seat, first of all, same. Second of all, this adjustable foot hammock, which hooks onto either the headrest in front of you or the seat-back table, is the next best thing. Even a little tootsie elevation goes a long way on a long flight, and this pick is padded for extra comfort. Just be sure to check with the airline before you pull it out—some don’t allow them.

Pure Petroleum Jelly
If I left town without at least one tub of Vaseline…I would simply have to come back. During flights, I slather this all over myself—lips, hands, the skin around my eyes, etc.—to lock in moisture that would otherwise be zapped. Slugging on the go? It’s a thing.

Ultimate Travel, Neck, and Body Pillow
As a side sleeper, this has been my secret weapon for sky-high snoozing for nearly a decade now. It rolls up tight and snaps in place so you can either pack it or attach it to your travel bag, and it takes just a few deep breaths to blow it all the way up. Personally, I like resting it on the plane window (or my fiancé’s shoulder, if I get stuck in the middle seat) for even more head support.

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones
Do I even need to tell you the importance of a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones when you’re trying to sleep on a flight? These from Bose (which yes, come in the cutest neutral colorways) are my recent faves thanks to the plush ear pads, un-freaking-believable sound quality, and straight-up silence like I’ve never experienced before. Like, my fiancé can be standing a foot away from me screaming about soccer and I truly can’t hear a peep when I have them on. Crying babies, meet your match.

I’ve tried a lot of hydration powders in my day (headache girlie here 🙋♀️), and LMNT’s are my favorite.
