An estimated 262,000 Idahoans are expected to travel this weekend. In AAA states, Thursday and Friday mornings are the best days to go out.
BOISE, ID — AAA says Idahoans are starting the summer with big travel plans for Memorial Day weekend. An estimated 262,000 Idahoans will be out this weekend, which is higher than pre-pandemic numbers.
AAA reports that 43.8 million Americans plan to travel 50 miles or more this weekend, 1.8 million more than last year, which was a record.
“Travel has seen a gradual recovery in recent years, with Memorial Day weekend expected to see the second-highest number of travelers in 2005, just below 2005,” said Matthew Conde, director of communications for AAA-Idaho. “It will be done,” he said. “Despite persistent concerns about the economy, travel and discretionary spending are still increasing. Clearly, many people consider vacations to be an important investment in their quality of life.”
For those looking to go for a drive, AAA suggests that Thursday and Friday mornings, before the holidays, are the best times to do so. The worst times would be Thursday and Friday afternoons, when the road is shared with commuters. Monday afternoon will also be tough as people want to go home.
“Fasten your seatbelts and drive at a reasonable speed. Getting there safely is always more important than getting there faster,” Conde said. “If you're camping or he's on an RV trip and he's heading into the backcountry on a two-lane road, you might want to give him a little extra leeway.”
