Neither Apple nor Baidu have commented, but the report seems plausible.
One of the challenges with generative AI is that models need to be trained in different languages and by region, if not country. Apple needs a Chinese model, and it also needs to be a model approved for use by the government.
Chinese regulators must approve generative AI models before they can be released to the public. Baidu's Ernie Bot is one of his more than 40 models that have already been approved.
Analysts also said that Baidu is the leading company in domestic generative AI and has exceeded expectations.
