Gov. Maura Healey's office will reveal the locations of personal travel upon request, following reports that the governor declined to reveal where she traveled last month.
Mr Healy's office has now announced that the governor's partner, Joanna Lydgate, took her on a long weekend trip to Puerto Rico for Mr Healy's birthday.
In a press release Friday, Press Secretary Carissa Hand said the locations of the governor's personal out-of-state travel will be listed on the calendar at the end of the month if requested by the media.
“The governor is focused on balancing the need to provide information to the public while protecting the privacy and safety of families,” Hand said.
When the governor leaves the state, his duties will be passed on to Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. Secretary of State William Galvin will serve as acting governor if Healy and Driscoll are out of state.
The governor's office announced in November that it would no longer publish advance notice of Ms. Healy's personal trips, citing “safety concerns,” but would share her calendar after the fact. However, the Boston Globe reported that the governor's office would not reveal where she went on her four-day trip in February when asked.
Earlier this week, Healy defended his decision to remain mum about personal travel. Appeared on WBUR radio boston “I'm going to continue to keep it personal when it comes to my personal time and my personal family time,” Healy said Tuesday.
The governor has previously announced his work-related travel plans and said he will continue to do so.Healy also said radio boston Host Tiziana Dearing said she believed voters were less interested in personal travel and more focused on policy.
“I think it's probably of interest to some people, but most people just want to know what we're doing,” Healy said. “You know, what are we doing about housing? What are we doing about the cost of living? What are we doing about economic growth? How are we protecting people's rights and freedoms? Do you have it?”
Her office did not elaborate on what safety concerns led to the decision to only release the private trip after it was completed.
In October, the New England neo-Nazi group NSC-131 demonstrated in front of the governor's Arlington home, where he lives with his partner and Lydgate's children. The same group later staged a protest in front of Healy's home in mid-February, when he was reported to be out of state.
Healy and Lydgate opened up about their relationship on The Boston Globe's “Love Letters” podcast, discussing how they navigate the governor's official role and how important music is to their partnership. .
