Spring is just days away, but it could feel like winter along the Wisconsin-Illinois border Friday morning, with heavy snow threatening to disrupt commutes for thousands of residents.
A winter weather warning is in effect for most of southern Wisconsin, including Kenosha County, and parts of northern Illinois, including McHenry and Lake counties, according to the National Weather Service.
The warning is expected to last from mid-morning to early afternoon on Friday and could cause travel concerns across the region.
The advisory said “travel could be very difficult” in southern Wisconsin, where areas including Madison, Milwaukee and Kenosha could see 4 to 6 inches of snow.
Areas along the Illinois border could see 1 to 5 inches of snow, but officials say the heaviest bands of snow could drift south, expanding the system's potential impacts. There are concerns that it may be sexually transmitted.
The biggest concern is Friday morning's commute, when heavy snow could cause slow and sloppy travel conditions.
Areas between I-90 and I-80 may see a few scattered snow showers, but these areas may also see a mix of precipitation and rain. Rain is expected to primarily impact areas along and south of Interstate 80 before the clipper system moves through the area, according to forecast models.
Another system will force through Monday, bringing rain and wind to the region before conditions begin to clear by Wednesday.
