The Chicago Bears have agreed to trade terms that will send quarterback Justin Fields to the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Fields was selected by the Bears with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, moving up from No. 20 in a trade for a first-round pick with the New York Giants.
In three seasons with Chicago, Fields completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 6,674 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He rushed for 2,220 yards (including 1,143 in 2022) and scored 14 touchdowns. Fields had a record of 10 wins and 28 losses as a starting pitcher.
General manager Ryan Pauls said in a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine that if the team was going to trade Fields, he wanted to move quickly and “do the right thing with Justin,” and to find out what his future holds. I made it clear that I didn't want to keep him waiting.
Now, Fields has found a new home with the Steelers after the first wave of NFL free agency, where he will compete with Russell Wilson for the starting spot.
The Bears probably wouldn't have considered moving on from Fields if they didn't have a potential generational talent sitting at No. 1 in Caleb Williams. But a chance to draft Williams, or another rookie of their choice, would also give them a chance to reset the rookie quarterback contract.
With Fields now in Pittsburgh, the focus shifts to who Chicago drafts first overall. Williams is likely the pick, but Drake Maye and Jaden Daniels are also likely to be considered.
