Marco Odermatt's attempt at history was denied not by other skiers but by himself, who lost his balance in Saturday's World Cup final.
Odermatt's World Cup giant slalom winning streak ended at 12, leaving him two short of the record.
In the World Cup Final GS held in Saalbach, Austria, Odermatt lost control early on the second run and went off the course, but his compatriot Loïc Meillard won.
Odermatt set the fastest time in the first run by four-tenths of a second, but finished the second run before he could record a split time.

The 26-year-old Odermatt, who had already won the season's overall World Cup title, had won every World Cup GS event up until March last year.
The record for consecutive wins in a single event was 14, set by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark in the GS from 1978 to 1980.
Odermatt was also the first to win all races in one season in one of the major disciplines (GS, slalom, downhill, super-G) since compatriot Breni Schneider won all seven slalom events in 1988-89. He was aiming to become the first alpine skier.
Odermatt could make history in the final two races of the season, the super-G and downhill at next weekend's World Cup finals.
He currently holds the record for men's single-season wins in all events (downhill, super-G, GS, slalom) with 13, ahead of three retired legends: Swede Ingemar Stenmark and Austrians Hermann Mayer and Marcel Hirscher. They are lined up.
American Mikaela Shiffrin holds the single-season wins record for men and women with 17 wins in all events in 2018-19.
