Put simply: The Strong National Museum of Play has announced the 12 finalists for the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Nominees for the 10th annual class include titles from a variety of genres dating back to the 1970s. In the end, only a handful of games will be selected. Who should enter this year? Let's take a look at the candidates.
The finalists for the Class of 2024 are:
- asteroid
- elite
- guitar hero
- metroid
- mist
- neopets
- resident evil
- sim city
- Tokimeki Memorial
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
- altima
- you don't know jack
As with previous years, this isn't the first time some of these games have made it to the finals. For example, Mist was nominated in 2017 and 2019, but fell short in both cases. Resident Evil was a finalist in 2017, and he was one of 12 finalists in 2022. Guitar Hero reached the finals in 2020 and 2021.
A decade later, John Paul C. Dyson, director of The Strongs International Center for the History of Electronic Games, believes there is still no shortage of deserving candidates who have had a profound impact on pop culture and the gaming industry itself. he said.
Typically, four games are inducted into the Hall of Fame each year. If it were up to me, “The Mist'' and “Resident Evil'' would appear without any questions asked. When it arrived on the Macintosh in 1993, Myst was stunningly gorgeous and completely different from anything that had come before. Resident Evil seemed to come out of nowhere and was terrifyingly good in every sense of the word.
The remaining two spots will likely be Guitar Hero and Metroid. I have fond memories of playing Guitar Hero (and rock bands) with my friends until the early hours of the morning. I didn't play much of the original Metroid, but I was hooked on Super Metroid on the SNES.
From now until March 21st, you'll have the opportunity to vote for your favorite via Player's Choice voting. Which game will get your vote?
Hall of Fame inductees will be announced on May 9th.
