Shortly after Destiny 2's Final Shape raid was completed, Bungie launched a final showdown with The Witness that all players could partake in. The result was as epic a finale as possible. It seemed nearly impossible to bring a Helm's Deep/Avengers: Endgame moment to life in a video game, but they did it. They really did it.
Play a 12 player activity right now. You don't have to be max level or max gear to get this much support. It's chaotic and it's incredible. So let me talk a little bit about that, and then I'll talk about the ending. Warning: spoilers below.
The final mission is a matchmade 12-player (you can of course join in a fireteam) assault that includes an early territory capture section featuring the full force of the Witnesses faction (I think five different enemy races appeared at once). However, on your side you'll have 11 of your friends as well as NPCs like Zavala, Ikora, Saint, Mithrax, Kaiatl, and even Savasun, who are introduced in a pretty epic foreshadowing cutscene that reveals Zavala's mastery of Stasis following the death of his Ghost.
The final fight against The Witness is even more complete chaos. You'll have enemies to kill, including a big mini-boss that can be taken down quickly with a large team. Stack your DPS while collecting Rifts of Light, while NPCs drop all sorts of weapons from Scorch Cannons to Hive swords. You then stand on the central platform and destroy more statues in the Darkness Plan before attacking The Witness' weak point. It took our group about three phases, but I imagine it can be done faster.
The Final Stand involves everyone spraying energy on the Witness for the Ghost, which, as we see in the cutscene that follows, kills the Ghost and takes away his last bit of light. However, Cayde saves him and offers up his now-lightened body, bringing the Ghost back to life. There were plenty of moments during this mission that brought me to tears, but this one? Wow.
The eventual city-wide celebration was highlighted by Qrow not only becoming the new Hunter Vanguard, but also getting a haircut, which is easily the best twist in this entire incident.
Finally, a little about what's to come, the “power vacuum” in the universe after the death of The Witness, and setting up the next year of episodes. I'm still investigating what's happening in the game and what's changed after this mission. I'll report back soon. For now, play this mission, which I consider to be the perfect conclusion to the last decade, even if it continues from here.
