The San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence at California State University, San Marcos, National University and San Diego State University have jointly received a $1 million grant from the philanthropic arm of tech giant Google to set up a cybersecurity clinic.
According to a news release, the clinic will be similar to a university's free health clinic and will provide critical digital security services to resource-strapped organizations.
According to the announcement, students will gain first-hand experience protecting local businesses, hospitals, energy grids and other critical operations from cyber attacks.
Google said the initiative is part of a national effort to address a growing cybersecurity talent shortage.
The report said there are about 500,000 job openings in cybersecurity, with more than 5,000 of those in San Diego.
Demand for professionals in the field is projected to grow 32 percent by 2033, according to the release.
The funding comes from Google.org, the search engine's philanthropic arm, and is part of a $25 million collaboration with the Cybersecurity Clinics Consortium.
According to a report by the World Economic Forum, cybersecurity inadequacies remain one of the top 10 global risks over the next decade.
